The Landsverk L-180



The Landsverk L-180, L-181 and L-182 were all similar armored vehicles from the Swedish manufacturer AB Landsverk. They were all built in the 30's although some deliveries are not passed through the outbreak of World War II. Total production was limited to 49 copies and purchased for various forces which mainly Netherlands and Ireland have purchased a relatively large specimens.



Design
Mid 30's, the first vehicle from the factory. The models, L-180, L-181 and L-182 look very alike. The differences lie in the chassis, engine and the weapons with which the vehicles are equipped. The armor was less than 5 mm and maximum 15 mm thick. The tower was placed above the rear wheels. This was a 20mm or 37mm cannon and a machine gun. A second machine-gun was placed in front of the fuselage and in a third at the back of the torso. The Landsverk had only drive on the four rear wheels, 6 x 4. The Landsverk L-180, a total of 30 copies of it, had a chassis and a driver for Büssing-NAG. The gasoline engine had an output of approximately 160 hp. The eighth cylinders were set up in a V-shape. The Landsverk L-181 had a chassis of Daimler-Benz, and was also equipped with a 6-cylinder gasoline engine of the same manufacturer. The power was about 80 hp. This version made 18 copies. The L-180 is about 20 centimeters wider than the L-181, and thereby more robust looks out. Only one instance of the type L-182 is designed for the Finnish army. The crew of the armored vehicle consisted of 5 persons. Dutch use
In 1934 the Commission Armored Automobiles investigated several armored cars include Fiat, Citroen, Renault and Landsverk. The Dutch army decided in December 1934 12 Landsverk L-181 purchase armored vehicles. they were delivered in 1936 and they have been included in the Dutch designation M.36 armored vehicle. In 1937, a second order was placed for a total of 14 copies of which 12 armored vehicles Landsverk L-180 and L-2 in 180 execution command car. These were designated M.38.

The first armored vehicle part (1 Esk Paw) of the Dutch Army was founded on April 1, 1936 with the M.36 (L-181). In June 1938 the establishment of the 2nd squadron followed which was equipped equipped with the M.38 (L-180). The main task was to explore and support the infantry.

The M.36 and M.38 armored vehicles are used successfully in May 1940. No armored car was disabled in combat. Failure of the cars but came purely by accident, engine failure or damage caused by the bombing of airfield Ypenburg. However, the armor turned vulnerable, and seated, in particular, the seams between moving parts such as tower, hatches and doors problems with air-tightness and melting of insulation rubber by enemy fire. After the capitulation, some Landsverk armored vehicles used by the Germans as war booty. They got the military designation Panzerspähwagen L202.

The Cavaleriemuseum in Amersfoort has a Landsverk L-180 (M.38) armored vehicle in the exhibition. This comes from Ireland and differs slightly from the M.38 which is used in the Netherlands.
